​​​Court Appointed Special Advocates​ (CASA)​​​​

Protecting Children in Court

Guardians ad Litem or GAL volunteers are appointed by the court to work for the best interest of abused or neglected children involved in the child protection system. The program welcomes volunteers from all cultures, professions and soci​o-economic, ethnic and educational backgrounds.

The Job of the GAL

  • Visit the child/children on a monthly basis
  • Investigate the child’s history and current status in regards to medical, education, visitation and other pertinent information
  • Prepare and provide written reports to the court to use in advocating and determining the best interest of the child
  • Follow up to ensure that children receive necessary services
  • To act as an advocate at every stage of the proceedings as defined by Idaho State Code
  • To act as a Guardian ad Litem for the court

Qualifications of a GAL​

  • An interest in children, their rights and special needs.
  • Time to devote to training, investigation, research and follow-up of a child or family group residing in foster care.
  • The ability to work with a child or children, family members, and professionals using tact, professionalism, concern and skills gained through National CASA training.
  • The ability to communicate verbally and in writing by making verbal and written reports to the Court with the help of an Advocate Coordinator. Complete criminal and child protection background checks.​​​
